A WORD FROM THE EDITOR:
WERE YOU SITTING IN THE DARK?

It was immensely interesting to watch as this event
unfolded. You've heard me say, many times, that the
Internet is our last bastion of freedom. Quite frankly, in
times such as these, old systems (electric or ANY kind of
cabling) are beginning to crumble, and our legislators seem
to turn a blind eye to the need for upgrading and
replacement.

The Internet is also an unprecedented mode of
COMMUNICATION
when other systems are down. Like the cell
phones used during the 911 attacks... we have tools
available today that allow for communication when there IS
no other way. I am hoping that Waybill'rs kept an open eye
during the massive power outages — as did I — for I
believe that this is only the tip of a lurking iceberg.

I would like to think that those who are in the treasure
hunting fields
are a lot ahead of the pack. We plan for
treks into wilderness areas, or at least areas that are not
commonly trod by human feet (who else goes into an old mine
shaft, or scrambles over rocky terrain in search of the
opening to that shaft? Who else would take a metal detector
into a river, beefed up by our latest research on nugget
hunting in water? Who else would traipse across a prairie
in search of ruins of one sort or another, based on our
weeks or years of research on any given lost gold lead?)

In other words, I think the treasure hunting crowd is
typically more prepared
than most of the public. We have
more tools accumulated. We have a different mindset, in
both researching an area, preparing for accessing the area,
and actually drumming up the gumption to go DO IT.

Think a power outage like this couldn't happen in your
area?
Think again. With summer heat of over 100* for days
in a row, even small Hobbs, New Mexico here ... has had a
series of "brown-outs" during the high heat of the day. As
"cool" is more important than "research" at that point, I
simply turn off the PC and take care of the ever-present
paperwork! But it is worrisome that even in this small
area, the COMMODITIES are not "rich enough" to take care of
a simple hot day's needs for 30,000 people.

I keep an open eye for tools that help. Whether that is a
business tool or something for TH'ers... I do a powerful
lot of research. Waybill IS, after all, a business. And
you, my reader, should benefit from that. Whenever I can, I
pass along the great tools I find. Use them or don't....
but here they are, each and every issue. And I want to
repeat... I don't give out recommendations lightly. I
research and try to find not just value in an ITEM, but
cost value as well.

There was quite a flurry of opinion and fact that came out
of the recent power outage back east. A friend of mine
published in her newsletter, a very prime and to-the-point
article, and I'd like to share that with you here. It's
*right below* this next tidbit on 1800s madness, mayhem,
skeletal remains... and of course, GOLD.

TREASURE LEGENDS: DISASTER, DEATH, TREACHEROUS TRAILS!
LEST YOU THINK OTHERWISE... ADVERSITY HAS ALWAYS
INSPIRED TREASURE HUNTERS, YESTERDAY AND TODAY!

... Bill searched hard enough for his brother's workings,
but he had nothing to go on. He could not be sure where the
cabin had been. Fall came and it was time to go.

On the way out, he and his guide lost a burro off the
treacherous trail along a precipice. Loose rocks gave way
beneath him. They carefully clambered down the steep rocks
to retrieve the pack. The dead burro was close to the
skeletal remains of another burro and that of a man. Near
the remains was a dry, brittle pack saddle.

In the pack saddle was a pouch containing a substantial
amount of gold dust.
There also was the diary of George
Skinner. Bill had found his brother's remains.

Bill buried his brother's bones right there. The diary
spoke of the letter left in the chink beside the chimney.
He mentioned again that he wanted Bill to have his mine in
case something bad happened. He described in some detail
the richness of the ore he had discovered, and his hopes
for great reward when he got back the following spring.

Of course there had been no following spring for George
Skinner ...

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT?

~ by Rosalind Gardner

A power outage of huge proportions has long been
one of my greatest fears.

I've imagined that scenario's disastrous consequences
enough that I felt immediately afraid upon hearing that
more than 50 million people on the eastern seaboard of
North America were affected by last Thursday's outage.

My initial reaction was to flee the city. Then I realized
that my truck's gas tank was only half full. We would have
run out before reaching the periphery of the affected area.

Our only option was to stay put, which had me even more
worried, as I knew that my friend's non-perishable food
upplies were non-existent.

Fresh water was a greater concern.

On hearing that the city of Toronto maintains only a 24-
hour supply of fresh water, I filled the bathtub. As I sat
on the edge of the tub, I pondered our fate and felt not
only sick, but very, very stupid.

For despite knowing the power grid to be antiquated and
extremely tenuous during hot and humid weather, as well as
understanding the nasty consequences of its loss, what had
I done to prepare myself?

Not much.

I, like most other North Americans have been playing a
'hope for the best' game.

Hope for what, though? That someone else will take care of
me when the situation turns dire?

Who might that 'someone else' be? The government? That's
rich. They too were in the dark - for which we can't really
blame them. They're only human too, and it's not like we
usually choose the brightest bulbs to light our collective
way.

Instead we elect politicians who tell us what we want to
hear, rather than those who would tell us the truth.

Most of us will elect the tax break that we can spend on a
new outfit, nicer car or exotic holiday. We definitely
don't want to hear that it'll take billions of tax dollars
NOW to build a grid infrastructure to keep our descendants
and us secure well into the future.

Yet billions of dollars will seem like petty cash when the
'breaks' we've given ourselves today result in civil unrest
and economic collapse tomorrow.

The same principle holds true for all that we do on an
individual level. Building a strong, secure and healthy
future takes work, not breaks.

I don't have a crystal ball, but when I consider history
combined with current events, it seems more important now
than ever to take responsibility and become as self-reliant
as possible.

That means becoming less dependent on government and
employers and building our own reserves of cash and
convertible assets.

However, not many of us have careers that allow us to
build up those  types of reserves, and many folks live
paycheck to paycheck, with  no reserves at all. Worse
still, those jobs and earnings can disappear in a heartbeat.

That's another reason I love my 'Net business.

Although the power was out here, my business didn't
disappear. My servers in Florida were still up and running.
And despite the fact that millions of folks couldn't surf
the 'Net on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, millions more
went online to learn about the blackout.

When they came online, they found my affiliate sites.

The Net effect?

I saw an INCREASE in my average daily income during the
blackout.

In retrospect, I'm delighted that this happened. My
greatest hope is that we've all attained a new level of
awareness about the importance of responsibility and self-
reliance, and that it will convince multitudes to harness
the power of the 'net to secure their financial futures.

If you've thought about having your own Internet business,
please don't wait any longer.

*** The time IS now. ***

GLENN CARSON, ON HIS BOOK,
A GUIDE TO TREASURE IN COLORADO

This book is the prize jewel in my writing achievements as
an author. It was hard for me to not put down the pen, head
directly into the mountains and valleys of the mile-high
state, and simply start looking for the things I was
writing about.

There is an aura of majesty about the state. In spite, or
often because of the villains, the low-lifes, and the
multitude of shady characters that made life harder for the
majority of hard-working souls who created the actual
history of the state, Colorado's history is full of
fascinating stories. When there is a concentration on tales
about treasure, as there is in this book, there is a mind-
boggling flood of lost and hidden treasures red-tagged and
explained in fascinating detail.

There are great piles of wealth awaiting the persistent
and lucky treasure hunter willing to explore the state's
difficult terrain, sifting through the all-too-scanty clues
to determine where the concealed piles of gold and silver
might still lie hidden.

There are fabulous lost ledges, where gold can be seen in
the country rock. There is outlaw loot and piles of high-
graded ore, worth thousands and tens of thousands of
dollars.

From the wide high plains to the most rugged higher peaks,
tales of wealth abound, and many of these tales have roots
of great credibility.

Do you want to enjoy a reading frenzy? This is a great book
to have that sort of experience!

~ Glenn

I read some of your PDF file and must say you are / your
dad is a fantastic writer. Your publishing experience shows
through in a big way. The book is absolutely amazing,
visually and typographically, and is a pleasure to read.
It reads like escape / non-interpretive literature, but is
(I’m assuming) based on fact. I'm going to read the rest
of it because I've been thinking about taking a break and
settling down with a good book.

The stories / legends are fun to read even if one doesn't
plan on searching the Colorado mountains. Hidden gold is
always an exciting notion to think about. It must be
instinct inherited from our ancestors, who obviously all
had gold fever, because I love reading stuff like this.
The adventure and the unknown – treasure hunting is so cool!

If this book is based on fact, have you ever thought about
writing fiction? You could write the next "Harry Potter,"
or something, and make it rich! Your literary skills are
top notch.

There's a certain appeal to "lost treasures of the past,"
I think it's automatically interesting to discover long
lost things and think about how and why they got there and
what life was like long ago. All this talk is getting me
even more interested. I think treasure hunting would be a
really fun hobby! Who knows, when I'm rich / better off /
older / stronger / wiser maybe I'll get right into it!

Like I said, I think it could be the adventure of a
lifetime. Researching the past, people's lives, acting on
tidbits of information, and not knowing what to expect when
you get there is exciting to say the least.

I don't know a lot about publishing, myself, but seeing
what you and your dad do is inspiring. There are a number
of stories about treasure to be found in my town... I am
fascinated by them and only dream of having the guts to go
out and look for some of it. The stories are pretty scary.

Just north of here are a number of treacherous mountains
where a mother lode is supposed to be hiding. The only man
who knew of its supposed whereabouts was hanged for murder.
It's a cold dark mountain range with bears, wolves,
cougars, etc. Most of it is legend, I think, though.

The lake is a beautiful area but beyond it I don't doubt
that it's unforgiving. Who knows, there may actually be
gold in them thar hills. Treasure hunting is a very
exciting notion. Getting right into it would be fun and,
probably, the adventure of a lifetime.

Thanks for the read! Keep it up. You guys are awesome.
Oh yeah, and don’t forget to try to make some cash so you
can continue writing and liking it!  :-)
