but a PROFESSION.

Perhaps, growing up in this field in the household of Glenn
Carson has somehow "bent" things a bit and given them more
detail, more successes, and more of the finding of solutions
when things don't go so well. Perhaps I have believed too
many treasure tales and read too many Tolkien and Oz
books... and the endings are sweet and powerful, courageous
and POSITIVE, and "the war" gets won by the
hero(es/ine/ines).

But I think it is utterly essential that you, who BELIEVE in
these topics enough to join this group, who spend time
reading books and yes, newsletters (:-), and who spend big
chunks of time playing with electronic gadgetry associated
with coinshooting and treasure hunting (your metal detector,
your GPS parephernalia, your beepers and scales and
what-have-you.... all the way down to the simplest of
screwdrivers or home-made sand-sifting pans)....

You cannot tell me loudly enough to make me believe that you
got into this JUST because of the Coronado Glow, the
Superstition Mountains Mesmerizing Aura, the Colorado Ghost
Town's Siren Song. You did NOT get into this for just the
treasure tales!

You got into this, as well, just KNOWING that someday this
could and *would* be lucrative. This would make money. This
would allow you to quit your J.O.B. (Just Over Broke).

Right? Am I right? Listen, growing up in this, I am severely
aware (and have included small sagas of this in papers from
high school to the doctorate level) of HOW LUCRATIVE
treasure hunting can be. In our home, this was not just a
hobby. This was not just a dream. It soon became an
actuality of putting pen to paper and coming up with a few
publishable "things" ... and with persistence... BELIEF ...
it really truly BECAME a real publishing house. A BUSINESS.

Treasure Hunting is a business.

There were times in my childhood.... LOL! ALL TIMES in my
childhood, rather.... my Dad's occupation with the metal
detector, with research, with traipsing the hills like a
billy goat... led to the means to send 5 children to school
with lunch money. It bought clothes. It bought gasoline.
Groceries. It filled the gaps. And then, it became the
primary life's work. The R.O.L.E. (Really Outrageous Life
Event!)

Treasure Hunting is a business. My vision here at Waybill is
to bring these together, to help YOU bring these together

each topic, in each newsletter. There are going to be a lot

You don't need an MBA to turn this into a business, just
like you don't need a doctorate degree in History to
research, track down, and FIND a hidden treasure.

There are lots of "nobody's" out there who, underneath their
VERY SAVVY **silence** about their occupations ... are
really very, very "somebody." They've found the perfect
blend of the intellectual and scholar in their searches.
They've donned the digger pants and mud-clad boots ONE MORE
TIME and had the courage to traipse the trails ONE MORE
TIME, with new perspectives found in books or maps. They've
turned their mistakes into a true gold mine of experience,
and never, ever gave up the dream, or the KNOWLEDGE.

And they've silently turned a passion into .... a business.

Our long year of constructing the boat has been, like the
old joke.... "Remember, the Ark was built by amateurs, the
Titanic by professionals." Not to say we aren't professional
here at Waybill! The Waybill site has been carefully put
together by people who know the ropes of this business of
treasure hunting, publishing, and now, THE INTERNET and the
power of the personal PC. But we have a unique blend, in
that we also specialize (a collective 80 years or more) in
research, in writing ... the "hidden" talents of searching
out lost and buried caches.

We didn't leave out the lifeboats when we constructed this
thing! You won't find more foundational advice for this
field, than here at Waybill!

Speaking of Noah ;-) ... there are a few more lessons we
could take away from this story:

1. Don't miss the boat.
2. Remember, we may all be in the same boat - but some of us
    pay better attention to the writing on the wall (oops,
    different bibilical story!)
3. Plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the Ark.
4. Don't listen to critics. Just get on with the job that
    needs to be done.
5. Build your future on high ground.
6. Speed isn't everything.... snails were there with the
    cheetahs.
